One of my favorite and most memorable days of ministry was when we were told we were helping a local pastor (not our specific local pastor, Pastor Alex, but another pastor in the Mixco community) help in his church. We figured we were helping at an event or service so we dressed in some of our nicest shirts and flowing pants. Turns out the way we were helping his church was tearing down an old house to the ground so it could be cleared for a space to building a new church building. I have one white-ish shirt on the race. I’ve worn it twice since I left the states. This was the second day I’d worn it in 4 months. Lol.

We were handling old wood, sheets of corrugated metal, dust, nails, etc.. After some laughter, we stepped in and deconstructed a two story house to the ground in one night alongside many Guatemalan men volunteering. The scene was utter chaos to us US citizens… dogs barking on the second story of the neighboring house, chickens and ducks running wild and clucking/quacking, a pickup truck backing in and out of the space unloading the rubble…

In the chaos and surprises, God’s mission was accomplished in an evening of tearing down the old to build the new.

I’ll invite y’all into the questions I’m reflecting on: Is there something you need to tear down and build new? Perhaps an idol you keep allowing to creep into your heart? A lie you’re believing and need to replace with truth? We all are in need of some reconstruction – it could be our thought life, our desires of our heart being out of whack, a bad habit, an inaccurate view of the Lord – in His magnitude, goodness, holiness, justice, omnipresence, grace, etc.

Let’s be a humble people eager to seek God’s truth, voice, and direction for aligning our hearts, minds, spirits, and wills with His. His way is better. I think we know that and can easily forget it. While I’m checking myself for what needs to be deconstructed in me and built new, I’m inviting you to do the same. And maybe, like the demolishing we did that night in ministry, it wasn’t done alone but in partnership with others, maybe you need to let people in to what you’re wanting to change. Id suggest we each pray about it 🙂

Love y’all!

Your girl,

Sierra 🙂
